At least 2,000 gallons of oil spilled into Baltimore Harbor on Wednesday (June 4), prompting a major cleanup effort involving multiple agencies. The spill, which originated in Harbor East, was first reported by Johns Hopkins Hospital as a 200-gallon diesel spill at their East Baltimore facility. However, it quickly escalated to 2,000 gallons, spreading to a marina area approximately 100 yards by 250 yards.

Maryland Governor Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott have praised the coordinated response involving ten city and state agencies, as well as the United States Coast Guard. Governor Moore stated, "Watching the coordination that we've seen here has not just been important. It's been incredibly impressive." Mayor Scott assured the public that there is no impact on drinking water and emphasized efforts to mitigate environmental damage.

The Baltimore City Fire Department, alongside contractors from the Miller Environmental Group, is using oil-absorbent materials and skimmers to contain and clean up the spill. The cleanup operation involves flushing the storm drain system to manage the flow of the oil.

The Coast Guard is leading the command, ensuring the containment of the spill within the designated area. Efforts continue to prevent further environmental impact as the cleanup progresses.
