Manhunt for Escaped Killer Grant Hardin Continues

The search for Grant Hardin, a former police chief turned convicted killer, continues as it enters its second week. Known as the "Devil in the Ozarks," Hardin escaped from the North Central Unit, a medium-security prison in Calico Rock, Arkansas, on May 25. Disguised as a law enforcement officer, he walked out of the facility, prompting a massive manhunt.

The 56-year-old was serving time for the 2017 murder of James Appleton, a city water employee, and a 1997 rape case. Hardin pleaded guilty to both crimes and was the subject of a 2023 documentary titled "Devil in the Ozarks." The U.S. Marshals and FBI are offering a combined reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to his capture.

Officials believe Hardin is hiding in the mountainous terrain of northern Arkansas, an area he is familiar with. His knowledge of law enforcement tactics, gained during his time as a police chief, could give him an advantage in evading capture. However, officials are confident he remains in the region, as stated by Arkansas Department of Corrections Communications Director Rand Champion.

The search is complicated by the rugged landscape and recent heavy rains. Authorities are using canines, drones, and helicopters to track Hardin, who is described as a 6-foot white male weighing approximately 259 pounds. The FBI has urged the public to report any sightings and consider him extremely dangerous.

Cheryl Tillman, the sister of one of Hardin's victims, expressed her distress over his escape, fearing for her safety and that of her family. The search area has been expanded, but officials have not disclosed specific details. Local residents are advised to lock their homes and vehicles and report any suspicious activity.
