A Memphis man reported being accidentally shot by his dog, Oreo, early Monday morning (March 10) in the Frayser neighborhood. According to police, the incident occurred when Oreo, a one-year-old pit bull, jumped onto the bed where the man and his girlfriend were sleeping. The dog's paw got caught in the trigger guard of a gun, causing it to discharge and graze the man's upper left thigh.

The man, identified as Jerald Kirkwood, was taken to the hospital in non-critical condition. His girlfriend, who spoke to WHBQ, described Oreo as a playful dog and noted that the gunshot woke them up. She emphasized the importance of keeping the safety on or using a trigger lock to prevent such accidents in the future.

Police classified the incident as an accidental injury, and no charges will be filed against Oreo or his owner. The Memphis Police Department encourages gun owners to use gun locks when storing firearms to prevent similar incidents.
