Two planes collided in mid-air during the Commemorative Air Force Wings Over Dallas air show on Saturday (November 12) afternoon at the Dallas Executive Airport.
Jason Evans, a Dallas Fire-Rescue spokesman, told the Dallas Morning News that the status of the pilots is unknown. No spectators on the ground were injured.
WFAA reported that one of the planes was a Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, which usually has a crew of four to five people. The other plane was a Bell P-63 Kingcobra, which is a single-pilot aircraft.
Texas Hispanic Policy Foundation Chairman and former Republican State Rep. Jason Villalba told WFAA that he was at the airshow but left just before the crash. He said he was hoping to book a ride on the B-17 but tickets were sold out.
"We left at 12:00, but George and I had planned to take a ride on the B-17," Villalba said. "We didn't because it was sold out. Wow. "
There were no passengers on the aircraft at the time of the crash.
The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are handling the investigation.
A video posted on Twitter by KDFW reporter David Sentendrey captured the moment the two aircraft collided and slammed down onto the roadway.
"GRAPHIC VIDEO: A mid-air collision involving two planes near the Dallas Executive Airport, today. The accident took place during the Wings Over Dallas WWII Airshow at 1:25 p.m., according to Dallas Fire-Rescue," he tweeted.
A second video showed the smaller Kingcobra slam into the slower-moving B-17, which broke apart and exploded into a fireball as it hit the ground.
