(Boston, MA)  --  Democratic Representative Edward Markey is the winner of a special election in Massachusetts to succeed John Kerry in the Senate.  A long time member of the House of Representatives, the 66-year-old Markey defeated Republican Gabriel Gomez to take the seat vacated by Kerry when he became Secretary of State.  President Obama was pleased with the results.  He said in a statement Tuesday night "The people of Massachusetts can be proud that they have another strong leader fighting for them in the Senate."  Obama added that "the country will benefit from Ed's talent and integrity."
